From 2008 to 2017, Chris Finlayson was Treaty Settlements Minister and oversaw settlements that broke new ground for the Crown – like recognising the iwi view that the Whanganui river is a living entity and giving it legal standing in its own right.

The same approach was used for Tūhoe and Te Urewera National Park, providing a bridge between the Māori world view and the common law legal system. Chris Finlayson talks about acknowledging past wrongs and misdeeds, about reconciliation and seeking to put things right.
