Our healthcare system is in critical condition. Doctors raise the alarm about staff shortages and burnout. Patients share stories of long wait times and delayed diagnoses. Building new hospitals and patching up old ones is expensive. What can we do to reach a healthier and fairer future for Aotearoa New Zealand?

Rob Campbell is former chair of Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, and Chancellor of Te Wānanga Aronui o Tāmaki Makau Rau (Auckland University of Technology). Lucy O’Hagan spent 20 years as a GP and practice owner in Wānaka and her first book, Everything but the Medicine is out now. An expert in wider public health issues, Boyd Swinburn is Professor of Population Nutrition and Global Health at Auckland University.
